Artificial confidence

Artificial confidence is borrowed confidence. The kind that does not come from you, but from an outside source: a number of likes, a group’s approval, or a machine that answers fast and well. It inflates quickly. It collapses the moment the source disappears.

The origin

Where this concept comes from

Twenty years spent designing the relationship between humans and screens, including eight at AT&T’s research center on HBO Max and CNN. The job was to manufacture trust: making an interface reliable enough for users to dare rely on it.

Then generative AI arrived, and the question flipped. The problem is no longer making machines trustworthy. The problem is that we trust them too quickly, and stop exercising our own judgment.

That shift is what the term describes. It did not exist. It had to be coined.

The decisive nuance

What it is not

Artificial confidence is not confidence in AI.

Trusting a tool after testing it is a decision. No longer checking because the answer arrives confidently worded is something else. In the first case you keep your hands on the wheel. In the second, you let go without noticing.

Nor is it a trial against technology. An AI has no intention. It produces a plausible answer from what it has read. The slide happens on the human side.

The mechanism

The four faces of artificial confidence

Insurance

“With us, you are protected.” Translation: without us, be afraid. Doubt is created, then the solution is sold.

Social media

Likes, views, followers. An external measure of your worth, which you grow dependent on.

GPS

“Follow me, don’t think.” Fifteen years of training ourselves to delegate our sense of direction without questioning it.

Generative AI

The same mechanism, this time applied to judgment itself. Not the road to take, but what to think.

The model is always the same. Create doubt, then sell the solution. The more you doubt yourself, the more you delegate.

Self-diagnosis

The three question test

Do you still check?

If the last time you cross-checked an AI answer with another source was weeks ago, the reflex has gone out.

Could you do it again without it?

A tool that makes you more autonomous leaves you a method. A tool that makes you dependent leaves you a result.

Does the result sound like you?

If a text published under your name contains nothing of you, it contains everyone’s averages.

The way out

Three reflexes to keep your hands on the wheel

Ask for sources. An answer without a source is a well worded opinion. It is the first filter, and the fastest.

Cross-check when the stakes deserve it. Two tools, or a tool and a human. Divergences between two answers are information in themselves.

Decide the angle yourself. The story you tell belongs to you. It is not a machine’s job to choose what matters in your place.

Dyslexic and dysorthographic, I spent years not daring to write publicly. AI did not give me artificial confidence: it gave me back access to my own voice. Same tool, opposite method.

Artificial confidence replaces you.
Real confidence reveals you.

This concept is at the heart of my talks and my training. You’re the pilot. AI is the copilot.
